Joanna Drake (Earl) joined Core Ventures Group as a General Partner in 2014.
Joanna entered the business world from Stanford as a management consultant with Booz Allen's Media and Tech practice. She became a serial start-up Executive beginning in the late 1990s. She has launched many world's "firsts" award winning media tech products: personalized videonewcasts from ReacTV, advanced set top box media services via Moxi, and Viewer Created TV on Current TV.
Her last big company job was as COO for the Western operations of DeNA, Japan’s leading mobile entertainment company. She spearheaded the post-merger integration with Western acquisitions, drove a global planning process, and managed divisions including Strategy, Data Analytics, Finance, HR, IT, and International.
Prior to DeNA, Joanna was a founding executive with Joel Hyatt and Al Gore of Current TV, the Emmy-award winning cable TV network.
As an inventor of Social Media, they were credited with many industry firsts; the integration of Google, Yahoo, and Twitter feeds into live television broadcasts; viewer-created advertising campaigns for Fortune 100 companies such as Sony, L’Oreal, Pepsi and Samsung; and the first community-driven episodic television series (“Bar Karma”) co-produced with Sims creator Will Wright.
As the head of Current TV’s New Media, and eventual COO and Chief Strategy Officer, Joanna managed many divisions including Afffilate Relations, Advertising Sales, Marketing, Research, Public Relations, HR, Technology and Current TV’s European operations.
Before Current TV, she was an Executive with other pioneering media tech companies, including Moxi Digital (“Apple TV”), and ReacTV (world's first personalized video newscasts).
